What makes a good website?
It takes more than just a pretty face! That’s certainly part of it, but you also need to account for security, scalability, mobile users, desktop users. A good website is your 24/7 storefront. Like a storefront, it needs to be inviting: easy to find AND easy to navigate.
Accessibility
Web accessibility refers to the practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites, by people with disabilities. Essentially, it is making sure that a wide range of people, including individuals who have visual, motor, auditory, speech, or cognitive disabilities are able to use a website.
Ignoring the accessibility of your business’s website means disregarding a giant swath of human beings – and potential customers. From the perspective of profit or humanity, it’s just not cool.

SEO, from the ground up
SEO refers to a website’s placement on a google search result page. You can pay to have ads appear above the rest of the search results, but do you really want to get stuck in that rut?
There are a number of factors to consider when we discuss SEO – in fact, everything from your web server configuration to the content on your site to the time it takes your page to load to the consistency of your digital presence to your social media profiles affect your business’s ranking on search engines. There is no one “easy” fix to the magic of “SEO.” Each of these (and more) factors are taken into account by Google’s (and Bing’s and Yahoo’s and Facebook’s and…you get the picture) search algorithm. Each of these factors build on each other to create the whole of how search results are displayed. Your website is a critical, foundational element of how you rank on the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).
However, even the prettiest of websites can be a dumpster fire as far as search engines are concerned. Why? Because Search Engines can see what humans cannot.
Imagine you’re shopping for a new house. You find one with a gorgeous new roof and top-of-the-line siding. It has a beautiful, well-manicured lawn, and a lovely, open-concept layout. There’s a chef’s kitchen, a luxury bathroom, big, bright bedrooms…it’s everything you’ve dreamed of. It looks perfect.
So you buy it. And about 6 months down the road, your beautiful new house appears to be slouching over. The siding is popping off and there are cracks in the walls. You call an expert in and find out that your foundation wasn’t properly constructed and now it’s crumbling, and your gorgeous, expensive new house is falling in on itself.
In this analogy, the code that your website is built on and that is powering the server it runs on is the foundation. (Speaking of Flash, if your site runs with it, you need a new one.) If not done correctly, even the flashiest, most beautiful websites will fail miserably at being found on the web.
Content Matters
You know you need a website, but you don’t know how to organize the words on the pages – heck, which words should you even use? Does it matter? You’ve been told blogging is a good way to increase your SEO…easier said than done. What should you write about? How often? Why?
Thinking up good content for your site can be an overwhelming task. Organizing that content, or (gulp!) actually writing it? That can seem impossible. Our staff writers have you covered. Our wordsmiths are research junkies, allowing your own expertise to be translated to the screen. Keyword optimization is certainly important, but it’s just as critical that human’s are capable of consuming the words you write.
